Boxed In was originally created in 2003 for a dental office in Phoenix, AZ. It incorporated push button activated solenoids that switched the tracks and the course the one inch chrome ball bearings took as they traveled through the sculpture. After a few years of display Boxed In was switched for a more practical sculpture in a new location in the dental office. At that point the solenoids were taken out and the track “switchers” were adapted to simple mechanical mechanisms.
A gear motor powers the auger that lifts the balls from the bottom collection area to the top of the course.
